Carnival Comes to Miami Bridge
During July 2008, Miami Bridge shelter youngsters participated in a unique arts program based on the mask-making, dance, and drumming of one of Miami’s most important cultural traditions: Carnival.
Miami Bridge Carnival is a series of workshops conducted at Miami Bridge’s Central campus where acclaimed artists teach residents to make masks, dance, and drum in a particular Carnival tradition. This summer, Miami Bridge kicked off the project with a two-week workshop on Cuban Carnival. On August 8, the workshop series culminated in a rhythmic performance for invited guests.
With the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, workshop co-facilitators Celeste Fraser Delgado and DD Eisenberg helped the teens craft text reflecting on the experience of mask-making and drumming.
